The sculptor’s prayer

Teach me…

Excerpts from the famous craftsman’s prayer that guides and inspires many creators and artists: “Lord, teach me to make good use of the time you give me to work and to use it well without wasting it. Teach me to learn from past mistakes without falling into the scruples that eat away at me. Teach me to foresee the plan without tormenting myself, to imagine the work without being sorry if it comes out differently. Teach me to unite haste and slowness, serenity and fervor, zeal and peace. Help me at the beginning of the work, where I am weakest. Help me at the heart of the work to hold tight the thread of attention. And above all, you yourself fill the gaps in my work… Purify my eyes: when I do wrong, it is not certain that it is wrong and when I do right, it is not certain that it is right. Lord, never let me forget that all knowledge is vain except where there is work, that all work is empty except where there is love. And that all love is hollow that does not bind me to myself and to others and to You…”
